As oil is moved through the engine, it collects impurities like dirt and small pieces of metal. The oil filter works in tandem with the car’s engine to remove impurities from the oil so they don’t collect in the engine. However, if the oil filter is not replaced regularly, the trapped impurities will build up and create pressure. The engine is designed to avoid oil starvation, so it will force unfiltered oil through a bypass valve, which can lead to engine damage. To avoid unnecessary wear and tear, the filter should be changed every time the oil is replaced or every 5,000-7,500 miles.
